“The Human Trace” Feature Becomes Web Series

In December 2004, film director Jason Satterlund decided to attempt the lofty dream of writing and directing a full-length feature film. After years of watching others forge this path, it became clear that this was an achievable goal.

Directing jobs are tough to come by, and he realized that the best way to get someone to give him this job was to prove that he could do it. After three years of hard work, and with a miniscule budget of $15,000, his dream was realized with the completion of “The Human Trace.”

When he shot “The Human Trace” in the Nashville area, he had visions of traveling to dozens of film festivals to show off the movie and brag about how the Middle Tennessee film community fostered an environment where a guy with a dream and a few dollars could create something special. He was half right.

The film made a decent festival run, and even won awards, but wasn’t accepted into the larger festivals such as Sundance and Telluride. After analyzing the costs of film festival submissions, travel, promotional materials, etc., Satterlund has taken a new approach. He decided to release the film as a web series.

“Online distribution as a great opportunity for indie filmmakers,” Satterlund says. “Each month “The Human Trace” viewership grows. So many people watched it this month that I nearly exceeded my allotted bandwidth. This is a great problem to have.”
