SCORE_UNDERSCORE! – NOVEMBER 13
A Look UNDER the Scenes at Music on the Big Screen..
Friday, November 13, 7:30 PM at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Nashville
Musical scores can paint a picture in the listener’s mind, but the challenge of “underscoring” music in a movie is to make visual images of a film become even more powerful. The sophistication of this process is not so evident to the film viewer and poses a particular challenge to the composer. To explore how music sets the tone and feel of a movie and how composers approach their films the Nashville Composers Association, Nashville Film Festival and Film Nashville have, once again, teamed up with Sacred Space for the City Arts Series in SCORE_UNDERSCORE! The performance, with original musical scores for four short films, is set for Friday, November 13, 7:30 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral located at 900 Broadway in downtown Nashville. A reception to meet the composers will follow the performance.
Each composer will have one short film “project,” that will include an early 20th century animated silent , Sinking of the Lusitania. All the composers will write music for the fourth film, A Short Good-Bye by German filmmaker Arpad Bondy. This film was specifically designed to explore the effect of what we hear on what we see. While the audience views the films, the scores will be performed live by local musicians in various instrument combinations and in different styles, according to the whim of the composer.
Featured Nashville composers are Dr. Sally Reid, Scott Hallgren and Rachel Fogarty.
Sally Reid is an award-winning composer, currently serving as Chair and Professor of Music at Lipscomb University in Nashville. She has written commissioned works for numerous musical organizations throughout the world, and for historical documentaries. She received the Bledsoe Award in 2008 for music written for the historical documentary, Dry Gulcher Down.
Scott Hallgren is a highly sought after composer/producer/keyboardist for film, TV and multimedia projects. He combines his classical and jazz training with contemporary sounds to adapt to any project, and has provided music and sound design for everything from national commercials, feature films, string arrangements for pop recordings, live events and educational video to the underscores of more than a dozen independent film projects.
Rachel DeVore Fogarty holds a degree in composition from Belmont University and is an accomplished accompanist, church musician and composer. Her works have been performed by Concert Chorale of Nashville, Schola Pacis, University School, and many other local soloists and musical ensembles. Recently she orchestrated the new musical, Call Me Home, by her husband, Kevin Fogarty.
SCORE_UNDERSCORE! is part of the Sacred Space for the City Arts Series, a collaboration of the Nashville Composers Association, the Nashville Film Festival and FilmNashville, and is sponsored by Friends of the Cathedral.
